Domestic violence is a serious issue that affects not only humans but also their pets. Many survivors delay leaving abusive situations because they fear for the safety of their beloved animals. At Praline’s Backyard Foundation, we receive many questions about how domestic violence impacts pets and what can be done to help. Below, we’ve compiled some of the most frequently asked questions to provide insight and guidance on this critical issue.

 

  1. **How does domestic violence affect pets?**

 

Domestic violence can have severe physical and emotional impacts on pets. Abusers may harm pets to exert control over their victims, causing injury or death. Pets may also suffer from anxiety, stress, and behavioral issues due to the hostile environment.

 

  1. **Why do survivors stay in abusive relationships because of their pets?**

 

Many survivors stay because they fear their pets will be harmed or killed if they leave. They also worry about finding pet-friendly shelters or accommodations. This bond with their pets often becomes a significant barrier to seeking safety.

 

  1. **Are there shelters that accept pets?**

 

Yes, there are shelters that accept pets, but they are still relatively few. Here is a link to the latest listing.  Organizations like Praline’s Backyard Foundation work tirelessly to increase the number of pet-friendly shelters and provide resources for pet boarding and fostering.

 

  1. **What should I do if I’m a survivor with pets?**

 

If you’re a survivor with pets, complete our survivors assistance page and we will assist you with your  pets. We can provide you with 7-days of free pet boarding for up to 2 pets or 7 days of pet friendly hotel stays while we look for a long term foster for up to 6 months.  In addition we will research pet-friendly shelters, foster programs, and other resources to ensure you and your pet’s safety.

 

  1. **How can I help pets affected by domestic violence?**

 

There are several ways to help:

   – **Donate**: Financial contributions to organizations that support survivors and their pets.

   – **Foster**: Provide a temporary home for pets while their owners find safe housing.

   – **Pet Boarding Partner**: Offer your time to help transport pets, assist at shelters, or raise awareness.

   – **Advocate**: Spread the word about the importance of pet-friendly resources for domestic violence survivors.

Yes, with time, love, and proper care, pets can recover from the trauma. It’s essential to provide them with a safe, stable environment and professional veterinary and behavioral support if needed.
