At Praline’s Backyard Foundation, we stand at the intersection of compassion for pets and support for survivors of domestic violence. Our mission is rooted in the understanding that the bond between humans and their pets is unbreakable, even in the most trying times. Unfortunately, domestic violence survivors often face the heart-wrenching decision of leaving their pets behind to escape abusive environments. Here’s why our work is crucial:

The Stark Reality of Domestic Violence and Pets:

– 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence)

– Up to 65%  of domestic violence survivors delay or refuse to leave abusive situations out of fear for their pets’ safety. (ASPCA)

– Only about 19% of domestic violence shelters nationwide are equipped to accommodate pets. (ASPCA)

Our Role:

Praline’s Backyard Foundation bridges this gap by partnering with pet boarding facilities, pet-friendly hotels, and pet fosters. Our aim is to ensure no survivor has to choose between their safety and their pet’s well-being. We provide:

– Safe Boarding: Collaborating with pet boarding facilities to offer temporary shelter for pets for 7 days, allowing survivors to seek the help they need.

– Pet-Friendly Accommodations:   Partnering with hotels to secure safe spaces where survivors and their pets can stay together for 7-days allowing for a gradual separation before the pet transitions to a pet foster.   

– Foster Care Network: Building a community of compassionate fosters ready to provide a loving temporary home to pets in need for up to 6-months.

As Praline’s Backyard Foundation steps up to meet the Maddie’s Fund April 2024 Open Arms Challenge, we invite pet-friendly hotels to join us in our mission to provide inclusive and welcoming support for domestic violence survivors and their pets.
